March 29th

After weeks of back and forth with various amendments, the house and senate passed a bill that would allow the sale of alcohol from golf carts. But Goc. John Baldacci hasn't decided if he'll sign it yet, according to his spokesman Lee Umphrey. Umphrey said members of the governor's cabinet have had what he described as a spirited debate over the issue last week. It was public safety versus another cabinet member whose family is into golf. Meanwhile legislators, golf course owners and others are putting heat on Baldacci, a golfer himself, to sign the bill.

Breaking news, March 30th, Gov. Baldacci signed the bill into law today. To take affect in 90 days. (July)

Senate Approves Golf Beer Bill

Thirsty golfers in Maine may find a welcome change on the links this year, if a bill that gained momentum in the Senate on Tuesday, March 9th becomes law.
By a 23-10 vote, senators endorsed a bill to allow vendors to sell beer from carts on Maine golf courses. A similar bill was heavily debated before it was rejected last session.

The revived measure includes safeguards, such as requiring sellers to be specifically trained, and be at least 21 years old. A golfer who operates a cart could not transport open containers of beer across a public road.

On Tuesday, the bill was ammended furthur to require courses allowing mobile beer sales to have stations where golfers can relieve themselves. (Porta-potty every nine holes.)

Abby Spector, Natanis club member, assistant, and seven time Women's Maine State Golf Champion,
is recuperating from unexpected open heart surgery at her home in Waterville.

Cards, flowers and gifts may be sent to
her home at 14 Dalton St. Waterville, ME 04901
E-mail her here, and we will forward to her.
